Bicycle Accident Insurance Coverage
Were you or someone you love injured while riding their bike? You may be entitled to compensation. Learn about bicycle accident insurance coverage.
You may be asking, if you were in a bicycle accident, will your car coverage step up and take responsibility for your injuries and damages? This depends on what the facts of the accident are. For example, you were on your bike and another vehicle hit you and injured you, and either it’s a hit-and-run, the driver has no insurance, or they just have minimal insurance, not nearly enough to pay you for your injuries and damages. What happens in that situation? In those scenarios, your car insurance will step up and take responsibility as long as you have uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage. That is the coverage that you can get that protects you from everybody else. If you have uninsured/ underinsured coverage on your car, or your parents do, then in those situations, you may get some type of coverage.
What if you have hit a pothole or a defect in the road? Can you get compensation from your auto or homeowner’s insurance? Those are much more complicated questions. What they take is for you to bring in your policy, we go through it with a fine-toothed comb and read all of the riders and all of the exceptions that are in there to make a determination of whether or not you are entitled to coverage while you’re riding your bike. A number of policies will specifically exclude it, so the answer to that question is if it’s not a situation where another vehicle has hit you, really what we have to do is analyze the policy language of either your auto or your homeowner’s insurance, or maybe both, to make that determination.
